uploading joomla

some people upload the joomla zip file then extract it, but i don't know how to do that :(

usually i just upload the whole joomla directory onto the public_html folder. it takes a while to upload, so you may have to refresh it a few times.

i started uploading to this new site about an hour ago, and i'm still at 20%. at this rate, it may take me up to 5 or 6 hours to upload the whole directory completely. *sigh*

getting started

i think the first thing you should do is download WAMP (if you're using windows) or MAMP (if you're on a mac, like me). this will help you design and test your pages locally (that is, on your computer) before you upload it to the world wide web for everyone to see and bash and criticize (hehehe). oh by the way, WAMP means Windows Apache MySql Php, while MAMP means Mac Apache MySql Php. there's also XAMPP, X (cross-platform) Apache MySql Php Perl... but i've never used it.

once you download and install it on your pc, you're already pretty much set. i don't remember ever changing or editing anything since i've installed it. next step now is to install joomla! you can download joomla here.

joomla newbie

ok so i got this client who wanted me to do up their website, and wanted a content management system. being the salesperson that i was trained to be, i said, sure! noooo problem! and started rattling off these technical terms that i had picked up while learning little bits of this and that to get a website up and running. lucky for me, their tech guy is also just learning joomla, so we were pretty much in the same boat (of course, he didn't know i had never used it before either hehehe).

when i got back to the office, i started googling and downloading stuff that i needed. i started lurking around forums to look for tips and also see what are the most common problems encountered by web developers. i don't know if i'm just too impatient, but it seems there are hardly any step-by-step instructions when it comes to installing the extensions.

anyway, i figured i'd just post every bit of info, every problem or detail that i encounter on this blog, in case some poor newbie soul gets lost trying to figure out joomla.... just as i am figuring it out now .
